Monument Lettering
Kinkaid Loney finishes your memorial with a lettering style that provides optimal results for the chosen colour of granite. Our knowledgeable staff can advise you of the best lettering style for your memorial.
We are also able to add a final date of passing or another name to an existing monument, marker or columbarium panel. We take the utmost care to match the font and size already in place. Carvings or etchings can also be added at any time.
There are four basic types of lettering for granite:
Sandblast – Sunken
This type of lettering is used on light coloured granites to create a dark letter against the lighter background.
The inscriptions are cut deep on an unpolished background.
V-Sunk
V-Sunk lettering is used on dark stones. After sandblasting to a shallow depth, it is then cut deeper by hand, with a chisel, to achieve a sharp finish, providing a distinct “white” letter on the dark background.
Double outline
A deep line is sandblasted aroud each letter then the polish is flashed out of the centre of each letter.
Raised
Raised lettering is actually a polished letter with the background cut away. Sandblasted to the required depth, the background is then cut by chisel to provide a smooth “white” background. It should be used on dark granites.
Etchings & Carvings
Etching and shape carving are the two main options for adding illustration to a monument:
Etchings are drawn free hand and add a personal touch to your memorial. Working from photos or momentoes our artists can etch portraits or scenes with exceptional detail onto your memorial. These pieces of art are a special way to personalize your memorial and to commemorate the life of your loved one.
Shape Carving
Shape carving is done by fine sandblasting to deeply cut three dimensional designs. Colour can be added to provide even more contrast and beauty.
Accessories
A granite vase is a beautiful way to accessorize your memorial. Measuring 4 x 10 inches in size these vases are as functional as they are beautiful. They come ready to hold your bouquet and are available in a variety of colours. Kinkaid Loney fastens your vase securely to the memorial base to ensure long lasting quality and beauty for years to come. Shown below are vases in two popular colours: Jet Black and Butterfly Blue.
Bronze Plaque
A custom designed bronze plaque adds another touch of beauty to your memorial. Plaques come in a variey of sizes and can be fastened directly on your memorial or base.
Bases & Plinths
If there is no room remaining on a monument, there are other options. One such option is to replace the existing base with a flat or slant faced base. This new base provides additional space for lettering, while leaving the main monument unchanged.
Another option is to leave the existing base in place and add a plinth. This plinth has a smooth, flat face that is ready for additional lettering. A slant-faced base can still be added under the plinth in the future as the family’s needs change.
Footing & Installation
The footing beneath a monument is extremely important. Kinkaid Loney installs foundations according to the guidelines of the Joint Board of the Ontario Cemetery Act. We incorporate a design which has been proven effective and long-lasting.
Our foundations include an additional granite top which keeps all concrete below ground and is not subject to weather deterioration.
